Allergy is becoming increasingly common in Melbourne. Delayed, eczema type allergic reactions can occur, in addition to immediate allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis. Allergic eczema presents as worsening of longstanding eczema or red blistering reactions to, for example cosmetic products or plants, in contact with the skin.
Patch testing is an allergy test that can confirm the cause of an allergic contact dermatitis. The test takes 6-7 days in total and requires patches containing allergens to be taped to your back and sometimes arms, for 48 hours. A reaction to the allergen can occur several days following application.
Avoidance of the allergen once determined can greatly improve your eczema and may even cure it, if the allergen is easy to avoid.
If you think that you have an allergic reaction but can’t determine the cause, consider asking Dr. Emma Hiscutt to perform an allergy patch test.
