Skin Peels

A chemical peel is the application of a treatment containing Glycolic, Lactic or Salicylic acid to the skin (usually the face). They are recommended to improve pigmentary changes (eg freckles, age spots, melasma), skin texture, sun damage, aging and wrinkles and can treat acne by removing blackheads and blocked pores.

Chemical peels cause an even, controlled shedding of several layers of damaged skin, which leaves a new fresh layer of skin, with improved texture and colour. To optimise effect 3-6 treatments are normally recommended.

Chemical peels can be superficial or medium, depending on how deeply the chemical penetrates the skin. Although an initial stinging sensation may be experienced, this resolves after 5-10 minutes and pain relief is not normally required.

Superficial peels have minimal downtime (3-5 days) and recovery is quick. During the recovery period, the skin can feel tight and will turn darker in colour before there is flaking or peeling of the skin. There will not be bleeding, crusts, or any need for dressings during this time.
